Growing Orchids in Water: Why It’s Popular and Whether You Should Try It!
My Experience with Orchid Growing
Should you try it? The Short Answer is YES! 🙌
With over twenty-five years of professional gardening experience, I have dedicated significant time to experimenting with houseplants. In fact, a little-known fact about me is that I consider houseplants to be much more challenging than outdoor gardening!
Despite these challenges, I am confident in saying that this particular method has proven to be the easiest and most successful way I have ever grown orchids. Using this approach, I have consistently enjoyed beautiful and stunning orchid flowers.

Water Culture: A Trendy and Simple Way to Grow Orchids
Introduction to Water Culture for Orchids
Orchids are often considered fussy to care for, but there is a growing trend that makes them easier to care for. Water culture, also known as hydroponic orchid growing, has recently become very popular, especially among beginners and busy plant lovers – myself included!
How Water Culture Works
In the water culture method, orchids are not grown in the typical media such as bark or moss. Instead, their roots are placed directly in water. This approach eliminates the need for soil and reflects the natural growing conditions of certain orchids.
Best Orchids for Water Culture
Water culture is particularly effective with phalaenopsis orchids. These orchids are naturally epiphytic, which means they grow on trees in the wild rather than in soil.

Why Is Water Culture So Popular?
1. It simplifies watering
With water culture, there is no need to guess when or how much to water your orchid. The plant consistently has access to moisture, which removes uncertainty and makes caring for your orchid much easier.
2. It looks beautiful!
Clear containers not only display the orchid’s root system, which in my opinion are beautiful in their own right, but also allow you to appreciate the plant even when it is not blooming. Additionally, you can have a little fun with different shapes and styles of containers to complement your decor, adding a playful and creative touch to your space.

3. It reduces common mistakes
Over watering is one of the biggest orchid killers. Ironically, water culture can help prevent it
when done correctly.
4. It’s beginner-friendly
Once established, maintenance is so simple…. dare I say it is almost nonexistent! This makes it an ideal method for those new to orchid care or those seeking a low-maintenance approach.

Who should try water culture?
This method is perfect for:
- Beginners who tend to overwater.
- Plant lovers who enjoy a clean, modern look.
- Gardeners who are short on time and looking for a low maintenance method.
- You only need a few simple materials.
Materials Needed
- Pruning Snips
- Distilled Water
- Clear Glass Vase or Mason Jar
- Scissors or Pruners
- An Orchid

So…. Is it worth the Hype? Yes 🙌 with the right expectations.
Water culture isn’t magic; however it can make orchid care easier, more visual, and even more
enjoyable. If you are willing to learn the basics and keep up with SIMPLE maintenance, it is
absolutely worth trying!
